'Secret' talks to test unity of Taliban

The US and Afghan governments have reportedly begun secret three-way talks with the Taliban. The Wall Street Journal newspaper reports that Afghan President Hamad Karzai confirmed talks have taken place and that the Taliban are "definitely interested" in a peace settlement. But if the talks are to have any hope of success, the Taliban leadership will need to bring all of its disparate fighters on board. Al Jazeera's Bernard Smith reports from the Afghan capital, Kabul, on the chance that the negotiations will succeed.

Taliban is more optimistic than ever

The US commander of the Afghan war will be back on Capitol Hill Thursday to weigh in on the decade-long conflict. The hearing couldn't have come at a more politically sensitive time. Scandal after scandal has rocked the country increasing anti-American sentiment among Afghans and turning more US citizens against the war. First, came the photos of Marines urinating on Afghan corpses, then US troops burnt the Koran and now a shooting spree allegedly by a US soldier last week left 16 civilians dead. However the message you are likely to hear from General John Allen is that this war is on track. Karzai 'accepts' Taliban office in Qatar

Hamid Karzai, the Afghanistan president, has said he will accept the opening of a Taliban office in Qatar for the purpose of holding peace talks. If the United States insists that the armed group establish a liaison office in Qatar, "we are agreed", Karzai said in a presidential statement on Tuesday. Earlier this month, Kabul recalled its ambassador to Qatar for consultations over reports that the Taliban was planning to open an office in the gulf country. As the 2014 deadline for the US led forces to pull out nears, there has been a growing need to engage the Islamists for a durable peace in the country. It has been identified that a proper address for Taliban will help facilitate the talks. The US and its NATO allies have been pursuing a war against the Taliban, but the armed group remains a force to be reckoned with, despite a decade of war. One complication to negotiations with the Taliban is that many Afghans still view them with suspicion and say they should answer for their past crimes. Taliban peace talks end after Afghan massacre

After nearly a decade, winning the hearts and minds of the Afghan people has been set back quite a bit. Sixteen innocent Afghans were killed by a US soldier in the Kandahar province earlier this week. According to American officials an US Army staff sergeant acted alone, but one man's actions have caused uproar in the war torn country and the Taliban has canceled all peace talks. Many eyewitnesses tell a conflicting story on the massacre claiming more were involved. Jake Diliberto, RT blogger and veteran, joins us with his take on the backlash of the tragic occurrence. Taliban vows revenge after civilian slaying

www.euronews.com The Taliban has vowed to "take revenge from the invaders and savage murderers" after the massacre of 16 civilians by a "rogue" US soldier. The country's parliament condemned the killings, saying Afghans were tired of the actions of foreign forces. The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force is on high alert following the deaths. ISAF spokesperson Brigadier General Carston Jacobson admitted the shootings had made a difficult and deadly situation even more so: "We pledge to all the noble people of Afghanistan our commitment to a rapid and thorough investigation, the short time between incidents that we have seen in recent weeks, are a burden and a concern for us," he said. Anti-Americanism, is already close to fever pitch following the burning of copies of the Koran at a NATO base last month, the latest carnage pours fuel on the fire. Human rights activist Nadir Nadiri says the killings will play into the hands of the insurgents. "These acts will undermine all the efforts to stabilise Afghanistan, it will also provide more tools for the insurgents to provoke people against the Afghan government and its international partners." The White House was quick to condemn the act and offer condolences to the families of the victims, but Afghan President Hamid Karzai called the murders "assassinations" and the "intentional killing of innocent victims." Travellers in Afghanistan are forced to face the dangers of bad roads, robbers and armed fighters. Report says Taliban preparing to retake Afghanistan

www.euronews.net A leaked NATO report claims the Taliban are preparing to retake control of Afghanistan when the alliance's troops leave in 2014. The top secret report, which Britain's 'The Times' newspaper claims was compiled by the US military, also says Pakistan's intelligence service has been helping the Taliban mount attacks against foreign forces. The document reportedly says that the Taliban sees its return to power as "inevitable" once NATO forces have pulled out and that many ordinary Afghans agree.

Everyone knows the US-Nato war in Afghanistan is lost. But that doesn't stop the killing as the invading countries try to find a way to dress up defeat as victory. And there's a horrific price being paid by the children of Afghanistan, killed by so-called "smart" bombs and missiles, and then labelled "terrorists" by the killers trying to cover up their "mistake".
