Unemployment on the rise in Spain

More than five million people were unemployed in Spain last year. The country's latest unemployment figures were to be released on Friday. The ratings agency Standard & Poor's announced on Thursday that it had downgraded the country's credit rating. With 38769 people having lost their jobs in February, and the new rating indicating an unlikely loan repayment for the country, trade unions are gravely concerned about an increase in unemployment. Al Jazeera's Sonia Gallego reports from Madrid.

Point Break: 'Spain last nail in Euro-coffin'

Eurozone finance ministers have agreed to boost the EU's rescue fund to 800 billion euros, to help countries like Spain recover from their crippling debt woes. Spain's financial crisis has prompted the government to announce its biggest austerity measures in over three decades. The country's vowed to cut 27 billion euros from its budget this year. It comes after tens of thousands of protesters hit the streets on Thursday, to fight against labor reforms. Michael Mross, economic analyst says that while the country struggles to rise out of its debt crisis, it will never be able to implement the new cuts. Sinking Spain: Lost in the recession pit

Spain has plunged into a second recession amid government measures to rein in the country's debt. Ratings agency Standard and Poors has downgraded nine of Spain's banks, many of which are bogged down in bad loans. It also comes as Spain's unemployment rate has soared to almost 25 per cent, the highest in Europe. And sweeping cuts to health care and education have seen thousands taking to the streets, angered at the government austerity measures. RT gets some analysis on the situation in the country from Professor of economics Philipp Bagus, author of the book "The tragedy of the euro". Yet thousands of property evictions still happen every week, as well as thousands of job losses. Drought hammers Spain, Portugal

www.euronews.com Large parts of Spain and Portugal are desperate for rain, nearing the end of the driest Iberian winter in more than 70 years. Spain got less than 30 percent of its normal precipitation this winter. With both countries in the middle of an economic crisis, many people feel it could not come at a worse time. Thousands of jobs and many millions of euros of agricultural output are threatened by this. Farmers who can are irrigating where rain usually does the job. Farmer José Manuel Allue said: "If it doesn't rain in two to three days, and the weather forecast says it won't, there is no solution for the crops. As there's very little water, we'll see what happens with fruit and vegetables. This latest catastrophe means a lot more people are going to be out of work in the farming sector. We have no idea how we are going to be by the end of the year." In the Mediano reservoir in Huesca, in the northwest of Spain, stored water used to submerge an abandoned church. At the moment, the front steps are dry. One year ago, on average, the country's reservoirs were 80 percent full. Weather expert Ángel Ribera said: "Spain goes through a cycle of drought. What is surprising about this time is how extreme it's been over the last three months. There hasn't been a drop of rain in many parts of Spain. There is usually a bit of precipitation at other times." Portugal is much the same. The government has just approved 90 million euros to help farmers with livestock, a hard move ...

Violence flares during Spain general strike

Spanish workers angry at a labour reform the government calls an "unstoppable" necessity staged a general strike on Thursday, bringing factories and ports to a standstill and igniting flashes of violence on the streets. Tens of thousands of protesters packed a square in central Madrid to vent their anger at the labour reforms and deep spending cuts, while in Barcelona, police fired rubber bullets to disperse a crowd that had set bins ablaze on the sidelines of a demonstration. Thursday's strike was called by trade unions protesting against labour reforms and spending cuts which the conservative government says are needed to save the economy, and has resulted in some mild clashes and detentions of at least 58 people so far. Austerity bites deeper in Spain

www.euronews.com Spain's government has announced further deep budget cuts for this year in its increasingly unpopular austerity drive, one day after an anti-austerity general strike paralysed Spain. All ministries will have their spending slashed by just under 17 percent. Civil servants' salaries will also be frozen this year and electricity prices will rise by seven percent. The tough austerity measures were demanded by Brussels to slash Madrid deficit to manageable levels. Deputy Prime Minister Sáenz de Santamaría said: "The government is trying to put in place all the measures necessary to change the situation - to end Spain's complicated public deficit and unemployment situation, so that we can return to growth and hire workers. " "This government will not raise value added tax but is calling for an extra effort within corporate taxes," she added. The austerity measures - including some announced last December - add up to 27 billion euros. Changes in taxes on personal income and company profits should increase revenues -- particularly the elimination of corporate tax deductions. Madrid hopes to cut the deficit this year to 5.3 percent of GDP, the level the European Union says is needed to avoid a Greek style bailout. Last year it was 8.5 percent. There will be no changes to jobless benefits, a major expense in a country which has the highest unemployment rate in Europe with almost 24 percent of the workforce is on the dole and half of all Spaniards of working age ...
