US President Barack Obama and former President George Bush have joined hundreds of families at Ground Zero in New York for a service marking the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Nearly 3000 people died when al Qaeda hijackers brought down the World Trade Centre towers, flew a plane into the Pentagon and onto a field in Pennsylvania. Mr Obama and Mr Bush stood in silence as a bell rang twice at the precise moment the first jet smashed into the twin towers. As cellist Yo Yo Ma played a mournful tune, relatives of the victims began entering the Ground Zero site, which has been transformed with a huge memorial. Tearful family members read out the names of their loved ones who perished in the attacks. A minute's silence marked each moment a jet struck. President Obama read a passage from Psalm 46 that speaks of God's refuge and strength. Mr Bush read a Civil War letter from President Abraham Lincoln to a mother who lost all five of her sons. The anniversary service began at 08.46am - the time the first plane hit the WTC's North Tower. The Ground Zero site now features a huge monument which opens to the public on Monday. The National September 11 Memorial has two reflecting pools, each almost an acre in size, in the footprints of the twin towers. The tall man who I think was one of the organizers tried to get between the two men. Later I caught up with the man who's name is Kenny. He is a Union carpenter who works at Ground Zero. On the afternoon of April 22th, a large oil slick began to spread from the former rig site, and today this disaster is the largest offshore spill in US history. Estimates vary as to how much oil is gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, but experts agree that it is between 50000 and 150000 barrels of oil per day. On May 19th, scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and elsewhere stated that oil had reached the Loop Current. By June 4th, the oil spill had landed on 125 miles of Louisiana's coast, washed up along Mississippi and Alabama barrier islands, and was found for the first time on a Florida barrier island at Pensacola Beach. More Than 1000 Bodies Are Unaccounted for The number of people believed to have been killed in the World Trade Center attack hovers around 2780, three years after the attack. No trace has been identified for about half the victims, despite the use of advanced DNA techniques to identify individuals. Six weeks after the attack only 425 people had been identified. A year after the attack, only half of the victims had been identified. 19906 remains were recovered from Ground Zero, 4735 of which were identified. Up to 200 remains were linked to a single person. Of the 1401 people identified, 673 of the IDs were based on DNA alone. Only 293 intact bodies were found. Only twelve could be identified by sight. New York City Medical Examiner Charles Hirsch had the difficult job of informing the friends and families of the victims that the remains of their loved ones might never be identified. The forensic investigation ended in early 2005, when the medical examiner's office stated it had exhaused efforts to identify the missing.
