Trains on fire - Pennsylvania Railroad 1955 - "What in Blazes" - Historic Trains in America

A safety film produced by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1955 that discusses fighting fires on locomotives and teaches railroad employees about the type of fires they are likely to face and the equipment that is available to fight the fires. PRR diesel & electric locomotives feature throughout the film including some interesting trackside and in cab film of trains on fire. Many different locomotives of the PRR are seen including GG1's. The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) was an American Class I railroad, founded in 1846. Commonly referred to as the "Pennsy", the PRR was headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The PRR was the largest railroad by traffic and revenue in the US throughout the first two-thirds of the twentieth century and was at one time the largest publicly traded corporation in the world. At its peak, it controlled about 10000 miles (16000 km) of rail line; in the 1920s it carried about three times the traffic (measured by ton-miles of freight) as other railroads of comparable length, such as Union Pacific or Santa Fe. The only rival was New York Central, which carried around three-quarters of PRR's ton-miles.

Norfolk & Western Railroad 1940's - "Operation Fast Freight" - Historic Freight Trains

In this educational documentary we follow a boxcar eastward on the Norfolk & Western Railroad from Columbus, Ohio to Norfolk, Virginia as a part of 1940's steam-era freight train No. 86. Track repairs and major shop work are also shown. From en.wikipedia.org The City Point Railroad (established in 1838) was a nine-mile railroad which started just south of Richmond, Virginia, from City Point (now part of the independent City of Hopewell) on the navigable portion of the James River to Petersburg, Virginia. It was acquired by the South Side Railroad in 1854. After the Civil War, it became part of the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad (A,M&O), a trunk line across Virginia's southern tier formed by mergers in 1870 by William Mahone, who had been builder of the Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad in the 1850s. The A,M&O was the oldest portion of the Norfolk and Western (N&W) when it was formed in 1881, under new owners with a keen interest and financial investments in the coal fields of Western Virginia and West Virginia, a product which came to define and enrich the railroad.

Very Bad Track: Maumee & Western Railroad

The Maumee & Western Railroad (reporting mark MAW) is located between Defiance and Napoleon, Ohio. It is a 15 mile long, shortline railroad. The line has two locomotives, ex-Illinois Central GP10 #16 (a GP9 rebuild) and an ex-Santa Fe Railway GP7U (CNUR #5). Trains operate daily between Napoleon and Defiance, except for Saturdays and Sundays. This was a former Wabash Railroad mainline, which ran Westward from Toledo. After the merger between Norfolk & Western Railroad and the Wabash Railroad, it became a neglected branch line under N&W, which sold it to Indiana Hi-Rail Company. Maumee & Western later acquired it, with financial assistance from the ORDC, when the Indiana Hi-Rail liquidated. The line passes through an area known as the Great Black Swamp, combined with the fact that it was lightly built to start with, means lots of headaches. Maumee & Western, with continued assistance from the State of Ohio, has made some progress, but no heavy maintenance has been done to this track since the Wabash days around 1964. The local port authority has offered to purchase the line, but Maumee & Western isn't interested in selling. The first scene takes place on Friday November 4th, 2011, in Defiance. #16 was kicking out several cars for Monday's 16-car long train to Napoleon. #5 (CNUR) can be seen at Defiance Yard resting her old GP7U carbody. #5 is often used for shunting freight cars at Defiance Yard, but occasionally makes it out when #16 needs a little more assistance with ...

B&O Railroad Musuem

Like us on Facebook! www.facebook.com Follow us on Twitter! twitter.com Penn Rail Videos took a trip to the B&O Railroad Museum back in October. Here's our video compilation from that day. Info below sited from the B&O Rail Museum's website @ borail.org St. Elizabeth No.4 The St. Elizabeth No. 4 was built in 1950 by one of the country's largest manufacturers of industrial locomotives, HK Porter Company of Pittsburgh. The No. 4 was a typical 0-4-0 switch engine, with a saddleback tank draped over the boiler and a compartment to carry coal in the rear. These switch engines were designed for use in areas with severe curvature, such as industrial complexes. The St. Elizabeth No.4 or "Little Lizzie" was used to pull hoppers of coal from a B&O connection to the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Washington, DC The coal carried by "Little Lizzie" was used to heat the hospital. When the hospital switched from coal heat to oil heat, the No.4 was transferred to the US Army's training railroad in Fort Eustis, Virginia. "Little Lizzie" was used in switching practices and was renumbered as USA No. 714. In the 1970s, the training facilities at Fort Eustis closed and the No. 714 was sold to the Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia. In 1980, the St. Elizabeth was given to the B&O Railroad Museum where it has been fondly remembered as the last steam locomotive produced by the HK Porter Company and one of the last steam locomotives ever produced in the United States. New York Central Railroad Museum

The National New York Central Railroad Museum is located at Elkhart, Indiana. Here is some information from their website: At the center of it all was the New York Central Railroad. Elkhart's National New York Central RR Museum recaptures the days when locomotives were symbols of progress, and ambassadors of goodwill across the country. The Museum was founded in 1987 and is an ever growing preserver of both local and national railroad heritage. Elkhart is a natural home for the museum; its railyard is among America's largest. Then, just as it is today, Elkhart was and is a vital link between East and West during our country's growth. Visitors enter the Museum through a 1915-built passenger coach. This area introduces a timeline to the local railroad history beginning in 1833 with the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern RR, and tracing it through 1914, when the New York Central gained control of the LSMS. At the end of the coach, the path leads through the Central System Gift Shop and into the Museum's main gallery located in a 100 year old freight house complex. This area, (the old freight house), features the history of the New York Central on the local and national level. There are numerous hands-on exhibits to help visitors "live" railroad history. A Gandydancer display lets the visitor "construct" railroad track. TLE&W Railroad Trackwork On October 15, 2011

Filmed on October 15, 2011 using FlipShare. Watch in HD. In order to get our train up and running our track on the Toledo Lake Erie & Western Railroad must meet FRA standards. In order to run every 4th railroad tie must be in good condtion. We started placeing railroad tie in Waterville, Ohio at Mile Post 15 where the TLE&W ownership of the line starts. We used our tie inseter to install the ties. These new ties will need to be spiked but, that is another project. This tie inserter was built in France and is a former Union Pacific tie inserter. The line we run on is 11 miles of ex-NKP trackage known as the "Cloverleaf Division". The Toledo Lake Erie & Western Railway is a non-profit organization and is run entirely by volunteers such as me. Donations are greatly appericated to help us get our train running. For more information or how to donate please go to www.TLEW.org Video property of metraF40PH163.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (HD POV Front) Magic Kingdom, Orlando Florida

Check out this On-Ride, Front Seat POV of the Big Thunder at Magic Kingdom Roller Coaster in Orlando, Florida. Length: 2780' Inversions: 0 Speed: 36 mph Duration: 3:30 Elements: Lift Hill, Lift Hill, Lift Hill At the Magic Kingdom, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is almost an identical mirror image of the Disneyland version, except for having an enclosed loading station on a hillside, the replacement of Big Thunder with Tumbleweed, and altered section of layout before the second lift hill. In this version, upon entering the queue, guests make their way up the hillside past old mining equipment to the station building. Once inside, the queue snakes through the upper level of the two level station. Guests can view a panorama of the ride. The queue then travels down a gradual ramp, switchbacks, and reaches the loading station. After a wait, guests enter the 30-45 passenger trains. On the signal of a flashing green lantern at the head end of the platform, the train is clear to leave the station. Leaving the station, the trains immediately enter a dark tunnel and make a tight left hand turn. After a short straightaway during which the sounds of bats can be heard, the trains make a slight right hand turn and climb the first lift hill. A series of caverns can be seen on the right hand side of the lift hill track. At the top, once again, it slows down and riders make a drop away to the left, before making a right hand turn and going over two hops while passing under the second lift ...

Floating railroad bridges on the Algoma Central Railway. 9/22/1994

We are south bound out of Hearst Ontario on the Algoma Central. We have crossed the diamond with the CN at Oba, and now crossing the first of two floating bridges. This is a fantastic ride, with scenery that can't be beat. Between Oba and Franz, at Mile 212 and 210, you will cross over the floating bridges of Hoodoo and Squaw Bay, on gigantic Oba Lake. These bridges are supported by pilings driven deep into the bottomless northern muskeg. Due to their construction and location, the Railway must perform maintenance on these bridges in the winter, when the lake is frozen. Go Karts on Railroad Tracks

Yesterday two friends of East Jesus stopped by to visit. As they pulled up, I noticed they had some kind of strange device attached to the top of their car. It turned out to be what they called a Rail Rider, basically a self-built go kart specially designed to run on railroad tracks. I've seen a few of these vehicles online, but they were all pedal powered. This one was powered by a Honda motor, and boasted speeds of up to 30 mph. Greg and Troy were nice enough to take me along on their adventure the next day. While we didn't get to go as high up into the mountains as we'd hoped (no train tunnels -- dang!), it still made for an excellent adventure, and I can't thank them enough for helping me knock one more item off my bucket list. Lehigh & New England Railroad Volume 1

This is a brief preview of the Lehigh & New England Railroad Volume 1. For more details and ordering information, please visit our website. DVD summary below: The Lehigh & New England was a rarely photographed hometown railroad which traversed a tumultuous scenic route through Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York states. Though known as being coal carrier, it also carried cement, slate and some merchandise traffic. Its paint scheme represented the railroad's two primary online commodities; black for coal and white for cement. The railroad's bulls-eye or "fried egg" herald is a variation of its parent Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company's "Old Company Lehigh" logo. Although 50 years have passed since its demise, the Lehigh & New England's early exit from the railroad scene and its all Alco diesel roster continues to stir interest among railfans today. In Volume 1 we'll look at operations of the mainline from Hauto to Pen Argyl and the Catasauqua, Bethlehem and Allentown branches between 1949 and 1961, through the films of Charlie and Ken Bealer, Arthur Angstat and the rare Randolph Kulp film collection of the Lehigh Valley Chapter NRHS.

Working on the Railroad - PART 3

Have you ever passed a track gang and wondered what all those machines actually do? Here's your answer and more. You'll visit a tie replacement and surfacing gang to witness the amazing parade of equipment as it progresses down the track. Closeup shots explain what each machine does. Then you'll tour a major shop to see in detail how coal hoppers are built. Next you're off to view undercutting machines cleaning ballast on BNSF. Did you ever wonder what it's like to work as a dispatcher? You'll visit a Norfolk Southern facility where the chief dispatcher explains the operation. Returning to BNSF, you'll see one of the most awesome pieces of railroad equipment: the P-811 concrete tie layer. This gigantic device lifts welded rails from the ties and forces them to both sides of the machine. It then removes old ties from the right of way, replaces them with new ones, and puts the rails back in place, all in one continuous movement. It's an absolutely fascinating, complex apparatus. You're sure to enjoy this and all of the other exotic equipment Workin' on the Railroad! Within The Oval - Trains of the New York Central Railroad in the early 1950's

Within The Oval is a film made by the New York Central Railroad (NYC) in the early 1950's to show the general public the activities of the railroad. Trains with diesel, electric and steam locomotives are seen operating on the famous named passenger trains such as the "20th Century Limited", "Commodore Vanderbilt" and "Pacemaker". Freight train operations are also shown, along with many behind the scenes glimpses of railroad activities that help show what was required to keep the NYC operating day and night.

Tweetsie Railroad's Annual Railfan Weekend!

Like us on Facebook! www.facebook.com Follow us on Twitter! twitter.com Be sure to turn annotations ON! In this video, Penn Rail Videos is going to take you on an exciting 25 minute adventure at the Tweetsie Railroad theme park in Blowing Rock, NC. We'll first start out by watching both locomotives (#12 and #190) prepare for their day's work. We'll then follow the #12 around the park first, watching it pass by in several locations, and even have some views from inside the cab! "Tweetsie" #12 was built in 1917 by Baldwin for the East Tennessee & Western North Carolina Railroad. She is a 4-6-0 "Ten-Wheeler" type locomotive and is the last narrow-gauge engine from the ET&WNC to survive. Next up we'll take a look at the ex-White Pass & Yukon Railroad 2-8-2 #190. She was built in 1943 for the US Army Transportation Corps. At this time, the US Army owned the White Pass & Yukon Railroad. In 1960, the #190 was brought to the hills of North Carolina where she has been ever since. To tourists of Tweetsie Railroad, she is known as the "Yukon Queen". Also of note is that the coach behind #12 came from the East Broad Top RR in Rockhill Furnace, PA. Also the open cars being pulled by the #190 also came from the EBT as flat cars, and were made into open air cars by Tweetsie. After we take a look at both engines in operation, we'll be treated to a double-header as the two locomotives team up to pull the regular tourist train. After this, we'll conclude with the grand finale show of steam ...
