Chem-drops: Gas drilling poisons water, lives in US city of Dimock

An increasingly widespread method of extracting natural gas from the earth is being blamed for leaving whole communities in the US without clean drinking water. The process, called 'fracking', involves millions of gallons of water mixed with chemicals and sand being pumped deep underground. The consequence is the release of trapped natural gas. While financially it may be a major breakthrough for the massive energy companies involved, the people living near the plants are afraid of what now comes out of their tap.

Hydraulic Fracture - Barnett Shale Gas Well

This video shows the emissions during hydraulic fracture of a Barnett Shale gas well. North Texas air quality is some of the worst in the nation. Pipes carry the approx. 5 million gallons of fresh water used to frack each gas well. The water is mixed with chemicals and sand then injected under pressure down the drilling hole. See The Endocrine Disruption Exchange for chemical list. This fractures the shale and releases the gas Hydraulic fracturing fluid was exempt from the Safe Drinking Water Act in 2005 at the urging of Dick Cheney. Halliburton is the main hydraulic fracturing company. There are number of ways in which hydraulic fracturing threatens our drinking water including surface spills, blowouts, poor cementing jobs, and communication to water zones. Hydraulic fracturing chemicals contain biocides, pesticides, acids, scale inhibitors, friction reducers, surfactants and others. See The Endocrine Disruption Exchange for list of chemicals. Industry spokespeople claim that 0.5% of frack fluid is comprised of chemical agents but Earthworks' research shows that companies can use as much as 40 tons of chemicals for every million gallons of water they use for fracking. www.earthworksaction.org The FRAC Act will enable the EPA to regulate hydraulic fracturing under the Safe Drinking Water Act. GASLAND Trailer 2010

GASLAND - (2010) Directed by Josh Fox. Winner of Special Jury Prize - Best US Documentary Feature - Sundance 2010. Screening at Cannes 2010. It is happening all across America and now in Europe and Africa as well - rural landowners wake up one day to find a lucrative offer from a multinational energy conglomerate wanting to lease their property. The Reason? In America, the company hopes to tap into a huge natural gas reservoir dubbed the Saudi Arabia of natural gas. Halliburton developed a way to get the gas out of the ground—a hydraulic drilling process called fracking—and suddenly America finds itself on the precipice of becoming an energy superpower. But what comes out of the ground with that natural gas? How does it affect our air and drinking water? GASLAND is a powerful personal documentary that confronts these questions with spirit, strength, and a sense of humor. When filmmaker Josh Fox receives his cash offer in the mail, he travels across 32 states to meet other rural residents on the front lines of fracking. He discovers toxic streams, ruined aquifers, dying livestock, brutal illnesses, and kitchen sinks that burst into flame. He learns that all water is connected and perhaps some things are more valuable than money.

Huge Fire Texas Produced Chemicals used in Oil and Gas Wells and Hydraulic Fracturing

Massive fire Texas - 04-10-2011 - www.calgaryherald.com - reuters - The uncertainty over what was burning lead to urgent messages to evacuate the immediate area and for those in the path of the smoke to stay indoors. Some authorities were seen in full hazmat suits. Rapidly moving flames and booming explosions destroyed a chemical processing plant Monday morning, leading to evacuations of schools and homes as thick, black toxic smoke darkened the skies. No injuries were reported in the industrial fire that began about 11 am CDT at Magnablend's Texas Liquid Facility off US Highway 287, about 30 miles south of Dallas. The Environmental Protection Agency was continuing to monitor the situation. Firefighters who arrived first on the scene quickly retreated to a safe distance. Two firefighters were sent scrambling as the fire swallowed an Ennis ladder truck. "The fire was moving so fast," Waxahachie Fire Chief David Hudgins said. "It was already burning through the back walls when we arrived. I didn't feel safe putting anybody in the building." The plant is not far from residential areas and two schools, and authorities estimated that 1000 people within a radius of several blocks were evacuated. The plant's 60 workers were accounted for. "Everyone is safe at this time," said Donald Golden, a company spokesman. He said the plant mixes chemicals for agricultural uses, among other things. It was a close call for at least a few first responders. Ennis firefighters who had parked a ...

Water contaminated shortly after hydraulic fracture

For more information see txsharon.blogspot.com Shortly after a natural gas well was fractured using the controversial technique of hydraulic fracturing, a private water well within a thousand feet of the natural gas well site began showing sedimentation. DISH resident Amber Smith says shortly after the well was fractured a fine sand like sediment was present in the water from their private water well. The Smith family installed a water filtration system shortly after the sediment became present and continued using the water. However, after a year the sedimentation reached the point that it clogged the entire plumbing system, and the water well is now unusable. The Smith family removed the tank from the water well and removed over ten pounds of the sand like substance. After dismantling and cleaning the well system, the Smith family reassembled the well only to have it completely obstructed after only 30 minutes of operation. Devon Energy who is the operator of the gas well has refused to take responsibility for the failure. The Railroad Commission of Texas responded and took samples of the tainted water for limited analyzing. The town of DISH also had independent testing accomplished to determine the content of the sand like substance. The water well owned by the Smith family shows levels of arsenic at 7.5 times the acceptable level for drinking water. The water also contained lead at levels that were 21 times above the acceptable levels, and chromium at more that double ...

EnCana Buries Hydraulic Fracturing Pit Sludge in Unlined Pit May 14, 2009

Twenty-three days after EnCana completed hydraulic fracturing operations on the F11E, the liner is removed, some of the sludge is pumped out and the remainder - perhaps 70 barrels or more - is dozed in. The pad overlies a spring that often surfaces here. It is fed by a shallow groundwater aquifer that supplies water to West Divide Creek and a family's private water well located maybe 200 yards away. An irrigation ditch is located approximately 30 feet from the East end of the pit. If one of the pumper trucks had overturned on the county road, spilling this stuff into the environment, a hazardous materials unit would have responded, sequestered the area, potentially evacuated citizens and employed measures to safeguard first responders, citizens and the environment. But because this is a hydraulic fracturing waste pit, out of sight of the public and on private land (owned, coincidently, by EnCana) it is simply covered up. This same site - if it were at a gas station or a paper mill or a chemical manufacturing plant - would likely be a violation and require extensive clean-up and proper disposal at a licensed facility... as it should. But, again, here, in rural Garfield County, it is simply buried. Industry would like us to believe that frac fluids are merely salt water, a little thickener, and food additives. But we know frac mixtures contain all kinds of hazardous substances, like biocides, benzene, hydrocarbons, solvents, descalers, surfactants, enzymes, acids, and ...

Fracturing Nasal Bone - Closed Rhinoplasty - Cosmetic Surgery

www.rhinoplastyspecialist.com A combination of art and science, rhinoplasty requires numerous individual techniques to be mastered by the surgeon. Procedural knowledge also plays a big factor as the surgeon must possess the technical skills and also exercise the right judgment when determining which techniques to perform in order to achieve the desired outcome. All of these items must be utilized and come together as one to achieve a successful rhinoplasty. The upper portion of the nose, which is made of bone, is commonly reshaped in rhinoplasty procedures. To narrow the nose, a surgeon must move the bones closer together. If a hump is removed from the bridge of your nose, your nose will most likely require narrowing as well. To correct a crooked nose, the bones must be realigned in a straight fashion. Narrowing and straightening the nose are both accomplished in a controlled manner by making osteotomies in the bone.
