Finite Element Analysis, Part I

In finite element stress analysis, the elastic body is first divided into discrete connected parts, which are the "finite elements". The points at which the elements are connected are the "nodes. The process of dividing the domain into elements is called "discretisation" and the pattern of elements is the "mesh". We then relate, using a "stiffness matrix", the forces applied to the nodes of a single element and the resultant nodal displacements. The final step is to combine together all the stiffness matrices of the individual elements into a single large matrix which is the "global stiffness matrix". We shall now illustrate this process using linear elastic springs. Boundary Element vs. Finite Element Method Analysis

www.integratedsoft.com Chances are that if you've done simulation using Finite Element Method (FEM) or Boundary Element Method (BEM) software, at some point you've discovered or been told that your mesh was not adequate to obtain accurate results. INTEGRATED includes both options in the same package, at no extra cost, so you can find the solver that better fit your application.

Finite element analysis of armor piercing bullet penetrating aluminum plate

Armor piercing bullet penetrating an aluminum plate from an intial angle of 60 degrees. Only half the bullet and plate is shown. This simulation was done as part of a scientific study to validate our numerical code, IMPETUS Afea Solver. Experiment were done in a lab and compared with the numerical simulations, with very good correspondence. At an initial angle of 60 degrees, the bullet behaved like in the video. Reference: T. ROUNDTAIL ASTM Testing and Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

The following video and images represents the ASTM testing of the ROUNDTAIL STEEL bike frame completed at MIcroBac Labs Hauser Division 4750 Nautilus Court South, Unit A Boulder, CO 80301. The FEA testing was completed by Independent Engineer; Windsor ON. Canada Based Tom Stein. The vertical testing was performed in accordance with the test requirements embodied within the Draft ASTM Standard Specification for Condition 1 Bicycle Frames as follows: Horizontal Loading Durability Fatigue Test: "The Roundtail frame was tested a minimum 100000 cycles with a cyclic load of 600N tensile and 600N compressive". And tested in horizontal fatigue configuration with a test fork of 367 mm (14.4 in.) in length. A cycle rate of 2 Hz was used. The testing was performed using force control. Vertical Loading Durability Fatigue Test: "The ROUNDTAIL frame was tested a minimum 50000 cycles with a cyclic load of 1200N to 120N load in the compressive direction". Impact Strength Test: "The ROUNDTAIL frame was tested with a drop height of 180 mm, and the permanent set of the frame and fork was less than 40 mm." ASTM F2711 specified the impact mass to be 22.5 Kg. (Video shows 3 instances of IMPACT for dramatizing the frames reaction to the impact, only ONE instance was required for the actual TEST of the vertical impact.

FEAsy @ Purdue - Finite Element Analysis made Easy

engineering.purdue.edu FEAsy:A Sketch-based Interface Integrating Structural Analysis In Early Design ABSTRACT The potential advantages of freehand sketches have been widely recognized and exploited in many fields especially in engineering design and analysis. This is mainly because the freehand sketches are an efficient and natural way for users to visually communicate ideas. However, due to a lack of fundamental techniques for understanding them, sketch-based interfaces have not yet evolved as the preferred computing platform over traditional menu-based tools. In this paper, we address the specific challenge of transforming informal and ambiguous freehand inputs to more formalized and structured representations. We present a domain- independent, multistroke, multi- primitive beautification method which detects and uses the spatial relationships implied in the sketches. Spatial relationships are represented as geometric constraints and satisfied by a geometric constraint solver. To demonstrate the utility of this technique and also to build a natural working environment for structural analysis in early design, we have developed FEAsy (acronym for Finite Element Analysis made easy) as shown in Fig. 1. This tool allows the users to transform, simulate and analyze their finite element models quickly and easily through freehand sketching, just as they would draw on paper. Further, we have also developed simple, domain specific rules-based algorithms for recognizing the ...

A Video On The Finite Element Method.

The finite element method is one of the most powerful numerical methods available for solving partial differential equations; which apply over complex shapes. Very often, in engineering science, it is difficult to solve a partial differential equation, which applies over a complicated shape. The process therefore is to sub-divide the complex shape into lots of simpler shapes, on which the complex differential equation can be solved. The process then is to solve the complex differential over each simpler shape and 'join' all the simpler shapes together, ensuring compatibility and equilibrium at the inter-element boundaries. This often results in thousands of simultaneous equations, which can be solved on a digital computer. Writing of the computer program is 'relatively simple', compared with solving such a difficult mathematical problem by traditional methods. The method can be used for structural analysis, dynamics, vibrations, fluid flow, thermodynamics, acoustics, electrostatics, magnetostatics, seepage through porous media, electrical and fluid networks, electronics, etc., etc. Large commercial computer packages are available, such as PAFEC, ANSYS, NASTRAN, ABACUS, LUSAS, etc., etc; which make solution relatively simple for most problems in engineering.
